The founder of the legendary New York restaurant Russian Samovar, Roman Kaplan, died in the United States, TASS reports. He was 84.
Soviet and American literary critic and translator, Kaplan opened the restaurant was opened in 1986 in Manhattan. Later, the outstanding poet Joseph Brodsky and the world famous ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov became his partners.
The Russian restaurant quickly gained wide popularity. To this day, it attracts the bohemian Americans, Russian emigrants and tourists. This year, the restaurant celebrates its 35th anniversary.
Over the years of its existence, Samovar has acquired traditions associated with the Russian diaspora. One of them was the annual meetings of representatives of the Russian community, American friends and admirers of Joseph Brodsky on the poet's birthday.
