Russian Embassy handed over to Serbia data on Red Army soldiers buried in the country

The Russian Embassy in Belgrade has handed over to the Military Archives of Serbia additional data on 2200 Soviet soldiers buried in the country. The soldiers died in battles during the liberation of Serbia from the Nazis, TASS reports.

The handover took place at the Serbian Ministry of Defense. The ceremony was attended by the assistant to the military attaché of Russia Colonel Vladimir Bykov and the head of the military archive Petar Ivanovich. Representatives of public organizations of Serbia were also present.

Bykov explained that it was previously known that 4,160 Red Army soldiers who fought the Nazis were buried in Serbia. The list increased to 6373 names after the information was updated. Earlier, the parties agreed to create a joint working group that will look for the burials of the Red Army soldiers in Serbia.

According to historical sources, from 8,000 11,500 Soviet soldiers died at the battles for the liberation of Yugoslavia. About 1.7 million people died during the war years.
