Employees of the Russian Consulate General in Alma-Ata provide help and support to Russian citizens amidst protests taking place in the republic, TASS reports. According to Consul General Yevgeny Bobrov, several Russians turned to diplomats for help.

The department noted that they keep Russian citizens informed of what is happening and help them coordinate actions. Russian diplomats are explaining to the tourists the procedure for staying in the city under the declared state of emergency and curfew.

The Russian Foreign Ministry is closely following the development of events in Kazakhstan. There is no data on the injured Russians, the ministry said.

Riots in the country began on January 2, when residents of two cities in the Mangistau region took to the streets demanding to reduce the cost of fuel. Later, the protests spread throughout Kazakhstan. The police used flash bangs, the authorities urged residents not to leave their homes. About 200 people turned to doctors for help, including about 140 police officers. A state of emergency was declared in the Alma-Ata region, the government was dismissed.
