American World War II veteran Frank Cohn called a campaign against monuments commemorating Soviet soldiers-liberators stupid. According to the soldier, who is now 96 years old, it is foolish to try to get rid of the monuments erected in honor of past friendship, RIA Novosti reports. It is equally stupid not to let athletes compete just because they are Russian. The veteran is sure that a person should be judged only by his own deeds.

Cohn considers it a shame to ban the annual ceremony in honor of the anniversary of the meeting on the Elbe.

Cohn left Germany, where the Nazis came to power, in 1938 with his family. In 1943, he joined the US Army, then took part in the Allied landings in France and in the offensive against Germany.

Even now, when many decades have passed since Victory Day, the veteran also speaks warmly of the Soviet soldiers, with whom he fought side by side.

The veteran believes that the Ukrainian crisis is a vivid reminder of what was happening during the Second World War. Frank Cohn has no doubt that this should never have happened.
