The memory of pilots, doctors and rescuers who became victims of a plane crash that occurred in 1970 in Peru was honored in Moscow. The funeral ceremony was organized by the Embassy of Peru. Russian and Peruvian diplomats laid flowers at the ketonaf erected in honor of the dead. The Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that July, 18 became the Day of Russian-Peruvian Solidarity. It marks the strong friendly ties between the peoples of the two countries.

The Russian MFA thanked the Peruvian authorities for their careful attitude to the memory of Soviet heroes.

As Russkiy Mir reported, on this day 52 years ago, a Soviet An-22 aircraft crashed over the Atlantic Ocean, which was delivering humanitarian cargo to residents of Peru affected by the earthquake. The earthquake in Peru in 1970 led to huge casualties - 70,000 inhabitants of the country died, 800,000 people were left homeless. The Soviet Union immediately came to the aid of the country.

The USSR sent to Peru not only humanitarian cargo, but also doctors, military, engineers, labor detachments of volunteers. About 60 tons of equipment were sent to provide assistance in the field. Soviet specialists were able to provide treatment for tens of thousands of patients, as well as help in the construction of destroyed settlements.
