Today an exhibit opens at the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War on Poklonnaya Gora. On display are a top designs for a memorial project titled “We Fought against Fascism Together”.
Mikhail Khubutia, president of the Union of Georgians in Russia, said that the exhibit will be open for a week, during which all visitors will have the opportunity to vote to select the their favorite memorial project. A total of 20 designs were submitted, and the competition committee selected 6 finalists, from which the public will select the winner.
Khubutia noted that among the finalist there are sculptors from Russia and Georgia. “It is symbolic that the competition for the best project is an open competition. This once again confirms that borders do not separate our peoples. This once again confirms that throughout the entire former Soviet Union we refuse to allow the rewriting and falsification of history.” This is what motivated the establishment of the memorial at Poklonnaya Gora, a symbol of the unassailability of memorials to those who fought in the Great Patriotic War.
The ‘first brick’ was laid on May 8 in a ceremony dedicated to celebration of the 65th anniversary of victory in WWII. The Union of Georgians in Russia invited veterans from Georgia to participate in the celebrations in Moscow. One veteran brought some soil from Kutaisi, where Georgian authorities demolished a war memorial in late 2009. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin then suggested that the monument be recreated in Moscow, and city officials agreed to place it at Poklonnaya Gora.
“This means that this memorial will in time become a symbol of Georgian-Russian unity. We will have the opportunity to come to this memorial and feel the connection with Georgia while at the same time honor all defenders of the motherland, regardless of nationality,” Khubutia said.
The municipal Architecture and City Planning Committee held an open competition from April 5 to May 25 for the design of the memorial. The construction will be funded exclusively by donations from the Georgian diaspora in Russia.
