The first Antarctic Biennale on Sergey Vavilov vessel

17.03.2017

prolab.ru The First Antarctic Biennale starts today March 17, TASS reports. Around one hundred expedition participants including artists, writers, scientists and philosophers will set off from Argentina. They will take the road to the southernmost continent by Russian scientific – research ship Academik Sergey Vavilov. The project is initiated by the sailor and artist Alexander Ponomarev. This idea came to his mind after invention of the Antarctic pavilion for the Venice Biennale.

The Antarctic Biennale made his idea turn into a major project developing in several directions. One of the directions is a series of artistic and discussion campaigns to be organized around the whole planet: in Europe, Russia and across the seas. Moreover, international competition for the young artists is planned as a part of the project. Expeditions to the Antarctic Continent will be arranged on a regular basis. This continent can be used only in scientific research and creative purposes for the benefits of the humanity.

The main conception of the Antarctic Biennale sponsored by UNESCO is “cultural comprehension and artistic knowledge of common territories”.

During the voyage artistic projects will be implemented right on board the vessel as well as during landings on the ice.

The outcome of the expedition, photographic and image documents of this voyage will be displayed in the Antarctic pavilion at 57th Venice Biennale of Modern Art later this spring.
