The incident in the Kerch Strait will not be a reason for the introduction of new anti-Russian sanctions by the European Union, the participants of the European Council’s summit concluded.

The introduction of new sanctions were previously demanded by Kiev and some Eastern European states.

At the same time, the document states that Europe is very concerned about the increased tensions in the Kerch Strait and in the Azov sea. According to the authors of the statement, Russia violates the international law.

European sources called the use of sanctions due to the incident in the Kerch Strait counterproductive. Europe believes that, first and foremost, it is necessary to reduce the escalation and resolve the issue of lengthy ship inspections.

Kiev is going to introduce its own restrictive measures, which will come into force in three years. This issue will be reviewed at a meeting of National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

Russkiy Mir reported earlier that Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite decided to impose sanctions against the Russians involved in the detention of Ukrainian ships that had violated the Russian border. Now they are banned from entering the Baltic republic.

Later Vilnius appealed to the European Union and NATO, insisting on tightening of the anti-Russian sanctions.

The deputies of the Baltic republic want the Western countries to cut Russia from the SWIFT system. They also believe that it is necessary to increase the pressure on Russian financial and energy sectors. The members of the Lithuanian Seym called on the Western countries to support the Kiev regime more actively, and by military assistance as well. Thus, in their opinion, will help Ukraine to get ready to join NATO in 2027.

The Seym also proposed to pass the Kerch Strait under the UN control and reinforce the presence of  NATO in the Black Sea.
