Russia's representatives took part in the memorial ceremony in conjunction with Holocaust Remembrance Day, RIA Novosti informs.

Delegation members brought flowers to the cemetery of more than 8000 prisoned Soviet soldiers’ graves. All of them died in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Auschwitz, Poland. Remembrance celebrations dedicated to the anniversary of camp’s liberation took place there on January 27.

Soviet soldiers liberated prisoners of the camp 74 years ago. Former detainees, politicians, diplomats, public figures and representatives of culture circles of different countries visit this place every year.

Federation Council members and Holocaust foundation leaded by Alla Gerber presented Russia. According to Alla, Russian schoolchildren should visit the museum of Auschwitz. She is convinced that this necessity is defined by the importance young generation’s thoughts on the future of humanity. Alla Gerber added that Auschwitz does not have Soviet soldiers’ memorial, and recalled that about 250 soldiers died here during camp’s liberation.

Holocaust Remembrance Day is celebrated worldwide. The exact number of all people who died in Auschwitz is unknown. It comprises allegedly 1.5 million people, more than 80% of them are Jewish.

As Russkiy Mir reported, the Remembrance Week in conjunction with the anniversary of Auschwitz liberation takes place in Russia. The opening of Saviors expo in Moscow City Museum became one of its major events. Multimedia exposition told about all the righteous men of the peoples of the world in our country for the first time. This title is attributable to the people of various nationalities, who sheltered Jews on territories occupied by fascists in mortal danger.

The Keeper of Memory award ceremony will become the culmination of the Commemorative Week. It will be held for the first time. People who made a significant personal contribution to preserving the memory of Holocaust will receive the award.
