Hermitage tops list of most visited museums in Russia

Almost five million people visited the State Hermitage Museum in a year, which allowed the St. Petersburg museum to once again take the lead in the ranking of the most visited Russian museums in 2019, compiled by The Art Newspaper Russia. The rating was created based on the attendance indicators of more than a hundred museums in Russia.

As a year earlier, the second place went to the Moscow Kremlin Museums, which increased attendance by more than two hundred thousand people and exceeded three million visits. The third place was taken by the Tretyakov Gallery, which, thanks to a successful year, swapped places with the Russian Museum.

The list of 25 most visited museums include cultural institutions from Moscow and St. Petersburg. The regional rating was headed by the New Jerusalem Museum and Exhibition Complex in Istra, the Moscow Region.

The Krasnoyarsk Peace Square Museum Center and the Yaroslavl Art Museum are included in the top three. Museums from Feodosia, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, Kirov, Arkhangelsk, Irkutsk and Omsk are also among the ten best museums.

Among the park complexes, the first place was taken by the Peterhof Museum-Reserve, among the local history museums once again the rating was headed by the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan.

In the five most visited literary museums were two estates of Alexander Pushkin - the Mikhailovsky Museum became the leader, and the State Museum of A.S. Pushkin took fifth position.

According to the results of the year preceding the Victory Day, three museums that are directly related to the Great Patriotic War entered the top 5 thematic museums. First place went to the Battle of Stalingrad Museum-Reserve, which was visited by more than two and a half million people.
