The monument to Prince Alexander Nevsky adorned the territory of the Russian Khmeimim airbase in Syria, Interfax reports. The author of the monument was the Russian sculptor Mikhail Serdyukov. The sculpture was made in Russia, then delivered to Syria. Now it will be located next to the temple of the Prophet Elijah on the Marshal Rokossovsky square. The monument was erected on a pedestal made of granite.

The solemn ceremony of opening the monument was timed to the Day of lifting the siege of Leningrad, which was celebrated on January 27. Rear Admiral Igor Kurochkin recalled that the legendary commander, the holy noble prince is the patron saint of Russian soldiers.

In his opinion, Alexander Nevsky should not remain in the minds of the modern military only as a hero of the past, who once defeated the Swedish and German knights. His image as one of the founders and defenders of Russian statehood, who showed himself both on the battlefields and in diplomacy, is still relevant eight centuries later.
