Athlete Alexei Molchanov plunged 80 meters under the ice of Baikal, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper writes. His achievement will be included in the Guinness Book of Records. It was recorded in the Irkutsk region, in the Zmeina Bay.
This is far from the first record for Molchanov. His name has already been inscribed in the Guinness Book twenty times. As noted in the Federation of Freediving of the Russian Federation, the athlete has won the title of world champion in this sport fourteen times.
According to professional divers, ice diving is the most difficult and dangerous of the freediving disciplines.
Ice water interferes with the achievement of deconcentration and relaxation. Psychological pressure also has a negative effect. The swimmer cannot go up at any moment, he must first reach the desired depth. In addition, there is only one ascent point, where there is no ice cover.
Such diving is a very serious challenge even for the most experienced athlete.
With his record, Alexey Molchanov wants to draw attention to the protection of the unique Baikal ecosystem. A few days ago, he became the official ambassador of the Russian Lake Baikal Foundation.
