Members of Arctic convoys commemorated in New Zealand

Russian diplomats and officials from Great Britain and New Zealand took part in laying wreaths at the memorial to the participants of the Arctic convoys in New Zealand. Victory Day events were held on May 8 and 9 in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland by the Russian Embassy in New Zealand and organizations of Russian compatriots, the embassy's website reports.

The ceremony was attended by the Russian Ambassador to New Zealand Georgy Zuev, the head of the Russian Arctic Convoy Club Derek Whituam, representatives of the New Zealand Navy, the military attaché of the British Embassy and other guests. The Russian diplomat pointed to the important contribution of New Zealand sailors to helping the Soviet Union to provide the front and rear with materials and weapons.

The Immortal Regiment actions were held in Wellington and Auckland, Russian compatriots living in New Zealand and diplomats joined the processions. Also, a local resident, whose grandfather fought on the fronts of World War II, joined the column.

Concerts dedicated to Victory Day took place in three New Zealand cities. Residents of Hamilton could visit an exhibition of photographs, weapons and medals from the Great Patriotic War. Speaking at a holiday held by the Wellington Russian Club, the Russian Ambassador spoke about the need to preserve the memory of the victims of the war and the price of Victory.
