The Spanish authorities decided to close the investigation, which was studying the mythical Russian intervention in the crisis in Catalonia. The investigation was carried out in secret, TASS reports with reference to the Spanish media. The investigation began in the fall of 2019, after the police provided a report on the alleged interference.

According to the Spanish press, the court decided to stop the case, since during all this time it was not possible to find facts that would serve as evidence of Moscow's interference.

Nine months later, the prosecutor's office demanded to close the case, explaining that the police report was based on the testimony of only one informant, which the police supplemented with materials from the media.

In 2020, another protest rally for the independence of the region from Madrid took place in Catalonia, as a result of the protests, about 30 people were detained, for ten of them the proceedings will continue in court. A search warrant issued by a judge reported a "Russian trace" in the organization of an illegal independence referendum that took place 4 years ago. Allegedly, one of the representatives of the movement was associated with a "group from Russia" whose leader promised to help the separatists by sending "ten thousand soldiers" and paying the region's debts.

The Russian Foreign Ministry then said that Moscow takes such a lie calmly, realizing that its source is persons who are able to go for any adventurous testimony to attract wide public attention. The Russian diplomatic service is surprised only by the fact that the Spanish media do not hesitate to publish knowingly false and unsubstantiated information.
