Russian athlete wins 1st Olympic gold in swimming in 25 years

Russian Evgeny Rylov has won gold in men's 100m backstroke, TASS reports. Never before have athletes from Russia won this distance. Rylov's result is 51.98 seconds, which is a European record.

Another Russian, Kliment Kolesnikov, came in second. He lost only two hundredths of a second. to Rylov. Ryan Murphy from the United States closed the top three.

In addition, for the first time in 40 years, Russian swimmers took the first two places in the same distance. The last time it happened was at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980.

Yevgeny Rylov already has an Olympic medal, the 24-year-old swimmer was third at the tournament in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. For 21-year-old Kliment Kolesnikov, this is the first medal at the Olympic Games.

Russia is currently in 4th place in the overall standings. The ROC team has won 15 awards, including five gold, seven silver and three bronze ones. The United States is in first place, Japan is in second, and China is in third.
