Any sanctions represent a wasted chance of getting relations between Moscow and Washington back to normal, said Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov, the Russian Embassy in the US writes on Facebook.

Earlier, Washington introduced news sanctions agaisnt the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). The Institute was included into the list of legal entities alleged to be military end-users. It means that export restrictions may be apllied to MIPT. According to the diplomat, the United States continues to destroy ties between the two countries, even when they have nothing to do with politics. The ambassador called Washington's actions "destructive".

Anatoly Antonov is confident that the claim that the institute is an ''military end-user'' does not stand up to criticism. MIPT trains technical specialists for the Russian military and industrial complex. But it is unclear how this could become a threat to the national security of the United States, the diplomat stressed.

MIPT was surprised by the decision of US authorities to introduce sanctions agaisnt it, but hopes that the restrictions will not affect the institute's ties with American universities and scientific institutions.
