The Russian drug for the treatment of coronavirus infection has been registered with Russia's Ministry of Health, RIA Novosti reports. The MIR 19 drug was created at the Institute of Immunology of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA.)

The drug acts at the gene level. It does not affect the human genome, but it suppresses the activity of the vital RNA sequences of the virus. According to the head of the FMBA Veronica Skvortsova, it was possible to establish a complete coincidence of the drug and the target in the genome of all known virus lines, including the omicron-strain. Besides that, not a single mutation was found, and this turns the drug into a universal remedy against different variants of the virus.

Clinical trials confirmed that MIR-19 is effective and safe. It has no detrimental effects on the human body; it is the virus that remains its target. The drug did not have a single side effect.

Musa Khaitov, who is the head of the FMBA Institute of Immunology, clarified that the medicine should be used in hospitals by inhalation. For this, medical nebulizers are used.

The FMBA also said that a special study is being prepared according to the protocol for outpatients. After it is completed, it will be possible to distribute the medicine through pharmacies in order to start treatment as soon as the first symptoms of the disease appear.

MIR 19 is an etiotropic drug, antiviral antidote. Its action is based on the RNA interference mechanism. It consists of two components: small interfering RNAs (active substance) and a carrier peptide.
