The Russian men's ski team has won gold medals in the 4x10 km relay at the Beijing Winter Olympics. The quartet finished with an advantage of more than a minute from the closest competitors, TASS reports. Earlier, the Russian women's team won Olympic gold.

The Russian team included Alexey Chervotkin, Alexander Bolshunov, Denis Spitsov and Sergey Ustyugov. Bolshunov, who had previously become the Beijing Olympic champion in the individual race, secured a solid lead in the second stage. Spitsov managed to keep the advantage, while Ustyugov increased it and finished with the flag of the Russian Olympic Committee in his hands.

The victory became a historic achievement, since Russian teams have not won Olympic relay races before. Soviet skiers brought the same victory to the country in 1980. In the past, Russian women's and men's relay teams won gold at the same Olympics exactly 50 years ago.

The victory brought the Russian national team the fourth gold in Beijing, taking up to the 7th place in the medal standings. In total, Russian athletes have 14 awards.
