A street in the Indian historic city, Kozhikode, has been named after the Russian traveler Afanasy Nikitin. The city authorities said that this is the first street in the ancient city named after a foreigner, TASS reports.

The merchant and navigator Afanasy Nikitin visited India in the middle of the 15th century. Kozhikode is listed in the famous traveler's notes "A Journey Beyond the Three Seas". The mayor of the city, Bina Philip, said that the name of Nikitin was given to the street that stretches to the sea, from where the traveler arrived in the city.

The city authorities organized a solemn ceremony dedicated to the renaming of the street. The representatives of the Russian Association for International Cooperation, President of the Society for Friendship with India Yevgeny Shilnikov, Consul General of Russia in Chennai Oleg Avdeev took part in the ceremony on Russia's part. A plaque with the name of the street and a portrait of the navigator was unveiled in the city.
