The Hermitage Museum specialists plan to start researching the Arch of Triomphe in Palmyra this fall, RIA Novosti reports. According to the director of the largest Russian museum, Mikhail Piotrovsky, it is necessary to clarify all the nuances of the structure of the world heritage site. This is necessary for the development of the arch restoration project.

The excavations in Palmyra will be carried out by the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences together with local scientists. The decision on restoration will be made with the participation of UNESCO. The three-dimensional model of Palmyra, created in St. Petersburg, will be used for these purposes.

The model combines the results of archaeological and historical studies that were carried out in the city earlier, as well as a geospatial display of the current state. Archaeologists and military topographers took part in the work. The model is based on aerial photography, which was carried out during the expedition to Syria.

The results of the research are presented at international scientific forums, Mikhail Piotrovsky explained. According to him, such reports are necessary for maximum transparency of the process and achieving the planned results.
