Nearly 2,000 Russians may lose their residence permit in Latvia due to an initiative announced by Riga to suspend the extension of residence permits for Russian citizens. This was stated at the Russian embassy in Latvia, Izvestia reports.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia intends to amend the legislation, according to which residence permits issued to Russians and Belarusians will not be extended. To enter into legal force, the amendments must be adopted by the Latvian parliament, but there is confidence in the country that the deputies will support the initiative.

According to the Russian diplomatic department, Russians currently have almost 9,200 residence permits in Latvia, over 1,800 of them were issued to investors. This category of RP holders can become the first to lose them.

Russians living in Latvia are already sensing the aggravation of Riga's hostile policy. After the start of Russia's special operation in Ukraine, residence permits were canceled for more than 760 Russians, a quarter of them lost their permanent residence permit.
