The anniversary of the Meeting on the Elbe was celebrated in Germany, TASS reports. Commemorative events took place the day before in two Saxon cities: Torgau and Beilrode. Russian diplomats, local residents and Russian compatriots took part in them.

They laid flowers at the T-34 tank, which adorns Bailrode. A few years ago, the monument to Soviet soldiers-liberators underwent extensive restoration work, and now commemorative ceremonies are held there every year.

The head of the city noted that the preservation of memory is very important for local residents. He promised that the monument would certainly be maintained in good condition, and expressed the hope that in the future Russian-German cooperation would resume at the same level.

Russian diplomats, local residents and compatriots also laid wreaths at the monument in Torgau.

It was near this city that the legendary meeting on the Elbe took place 78 years ago, which became one of the main symbols of the end of World War II. Representatives of Russian and American troops met there.

The memorial, which reminds of the meeting, was installed on the left bank of the river shortly after the Victory. There is another monument in Torgau called "The Spirit of the Elbe". It was placed opposite the first, on the opposite bank of the Elbe, at the end of the 20th century.
