The elementary school, located in Shalgotaryan, ungary, wants to return the name of Yuri Gagarin, TASS reports. This idea is supported by local residents, parents of schoolchildren and graduates of the educational institution.

The school was named after the first cosmonaut in 1969. The name was changed in 2007 for political reasons. At the same time, the school in the city is still called "Gagarin", a portrait of the cosmonaut has been preserved on the building and emblem of the educational institution, and school teams at olympiads and competitions are also named after Gagarin.

Deputy Mayor Mate Husar, who considers himself an "old Gagarin" because he also graduated from this school, came up with the idea to organize a vote on this issue. The proposal was supported by local residents. The city authorities plan to appeal to the head of the educational district.

Mate Husar noted that the school proudly bore the name of the first man to go into space. Nothing better symbolizes progress, development, than one of the most prominent names in the history of space exploration, he is sure.
