Nizhny Novgorod to become cultural capital of Russia in 2024

Nizhny Novgorod will become the cultural capital of Russia next year, TASS reports. The head of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin, thanked everyone who cast their vote in the popular vote.

According to him, the region’s application was compiled by a large team of specialists. Projects in the cultural and educational spheres that will be implemented in 2024 were nominated for the competition.

Nikitin added that the program proposed by Nizhny Novgorod will include 150 events. He promised that the events would be of interest to both tourists and local residents.

In 2023, the city had the status of the Youth Capital of Russia, in 2022 - the New Year's Capital.

The Cultural Capital of the Year competition was held for the first time. It will be held annually, cities with at least 250,000 residents are invited to participate. According to the organizers, they excluded Moscow and St. Petersburg from the list of participants in order to create equal conditions for all competitors. Representatives of these megacities act as co-organizers and experts.
