More than a 100 people participate in the forum of Russian language teachers, TASS reports. Teachers from various cities along with students from local universities studying Russian language, gathered in Havana. The event will last until October, 15.

There are leading specialists from the Russian Biotechnology University, representatives of Moscow State University, RUDN, Moscow State Linguistic University, and the Pushkin Institute of Russian Language among the speakers.

The Havana event is part of a comprehensive project designed to introduce effective methods for teaching Russian as a foreign language abroad. Conducted on behalf of Rossotrudnichestvo, the initiative receives support from the World Association of Graduates of Russian Universities.

The head of the Cuban government Manuel Marrero emphasized the need for more specialists proficient in the Russian language. He believes that this proficiency will facilitate the expansion of ties between Cuba and Russia in trade and the economy. According to the Prime Minister, as contacts between the two countries strengthen and deepen, the demand for individuals capable of reinforcing this process will increase.

It is worth mentioning that in the second half of the last century, the Russian language in Cuba was very popular. It was studied in many educational institutions. According to various sources, up to one million Cubans spoke Russian. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian language gave up its position and was replaced by English. However, today bilateral ties between Moscow and Havana are strengthening again, so interest in the Russian language and culture is growing again.
