The European Parliament will consider a petition dedicated to the rights of Russian pensioners living in Latvia. The petition asks to exempt Russians of retirement age of the obligation to take exams on knowledge of the state language, the Baltnews telegram channel reports.

Former mayor of Riga Nil Ushakov said that a petition had been registered in the European Parliament. The petition is directed against the plans of the Latvian authorities to expel Russian citizens who have not passed the state language exams.

According to him, almost 5,000 signatures for the petition were collected throughout Latvia. ''Now the main task is to tell members of the European Parliament about what is happening in Latvia,'' notes Nil Ushakov. ''Most of them have a rather limited understanding of what is happening in our country, and even more so they do not know that in the near future, perhaps, elderly people will be forcibly expelled from Latvia.''

Hearings in the European Parliament on this issue will be held in November of this year. The Latvian authorities order Russians deprived of a residence permit to leave the territory of the state before November, 30.
