Ilya Malinin made figure skating history with first quadruple axel

Figure skater Ilya Malinin, representing the United States, made history by successfully executing a quadruple axel in a short program, TASS reported. This groundbreaking achievement occurred during the finals of the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix series held in the Chinese capital. 

Malinin secured the highest points in the short program, with second and third places held by Japanese athletes Shoma Uno and Yuma Kagiyama. The figure skaters will present their free programs on December 9.

At 19 years old, Ilya Malinin, the 2022 World Junior Champion, clinched third place at this year's world championships. In a historic achievement, he became the first skater to perform a quadruple axel at the World Championships in the spring. It is an an element considered the most challenging and valuable according to the ISU grading system. In September 2022, Malinin, the son of two figure skaters, also became the first skater worldwide to execute a quadruple jump in competition, during the free program at the U.S. International Classic.
