Russian compatriots living in Zimbabwe, diplomats, and Orthodox residents of the African country celebrated Christmas, TASS reports. For the first time in history, a festive service was held in Harare. It was headed by the chairman of the Missionary Department of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, Priest Georgy Maximov.

According to the clergyman, this is a very significant event for believers. The service was organized in one of the premises on the territory of the diplomatic mission. The priest hopes that a real temple and a choir will soon be built in the Zimbabwean capital.

Orthodox believers living in other African countries also celebrated Christmas. Festive services were held in Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal and other countries, although churches belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) are not open everywhere.

Georgy Maksimov recalled that today ROC parishes operate in 30 out of 54 African countries. The Orthodox Church helps Africans in difficult life situations.
