Literary-Musical Night “We Understand Each Other without Translation”

On December 12, 2014 the Academic Library of the Latvian University in Riga hosted a literary-musical night from the series “Two Hundred Years of Russian Poetry in Latvia”, titled “We Understand Each Other without Translation”. The series is supervised by the Baltic Guild of Poets under financial support of the Russkiy Mir Foundation. The night’s theme is Latvian poets writing verses in Russian.

Many Latvian poets created their poems not only in their mother tongue, but in Russian as well. Recited at the party were the poems of Leon Briedis, Janis Rokpelnis, Amanda Aizpuriete, Ojar Vacietis, and other Riga-based poets. The night concluded with a performance of well-known actor from Mikhail Chekhov Russian Theatre in Riga Leonid Lents and his wife Svetlana Vidyakina, Chair of the Pushkin Society in Latvia. The audience listened to their recital of correspondence fragments and poems by Janis Rainis and Aspasia.

The background music was provided by bard Angela Mikusha, poet and bard Evgeniya Oshurkova, soloists from the International Talent Centre under the supervision of Galina Poltorak.
