St. Alexander Nevsky’s 800th anniversary will be widely celebrated in 2021

15.03.2017

Preparation for anniversary of the Grand Prince of Novgorod Alexander Nevsky was discussed at the first session of the organizing committee headed by the Russian Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky. In his words, many various events surrounding the anniversary are being organized by this date. The jubilee will be celebrated in 2021, TASS reports. It is planned to repair and restore related objects of cultural heritage. Besides, different festivals, historic reenactments, contests and exhibitions will be arranged. Editions connected to St. Alexander Nevsky will also be published.

International scientific conference will take place along with other jubilee ceremonies. Vladimir Medinsky believes that it is important to attract scientists to conduct corresponding research as, at present, there are people cherishing the idea that A. Nevsky was a kind of collaborationist. Medinsky thinks that experts should study such theories and stand up to them with dignity. Animation motion picture about life of Alexander Nevsky is to be produced.

St. Alexander Nevsky died in the Gorodetsk eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church and a museum in the honor of this prominent political figure will be opened. Currently there are no other museums in his commemoration.

The inter-institutional plan is comprised for six years. A range of executive authorities, Russian Orthodox church, nongovernmental institutions and funds will be involved in its implementation. Main celebration activities will take place in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Pskov, Veliky Novgorod, Vladimir and Yaroslavl.
