Putin: “Verdict of CAS on Russian sportsmen is good news”

02.02.2018

infourok.ruThe verdict of the Court of Arbitration for Sports has proved innocence of the majority of Russian athletes, Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated. In his words, CAS’s verdict is good news, TASS informs.

Russian leader has remarked that any situation can be eventually resolved by the verdict of the court, which is the supreme institution and should be respected. At this, we should not fall into the euphoria and give respect to the other party we had the dispute with.

He has assured that Russia has still a big room for improvement of national anti-doping programme and for raising efficiency of anti-doping combatting. Vladimir Putin has confirmed that Russian authorities are going to continue working over this together with International Olympic Committee, WADA and other international organizations.

Note that appeals by Russian sportsmen with regard to the decision of the International Olympic Committee about lifetime bans from the Olympic Games have been satisfied. It was a decision of Court of Arbitration for Sports. 28 people were justified in total. The athletes were accused of anti-doping rules’ infringements at Winter Olympics in Sochi held in 2014.
11 people more were justified only partially. The lifetime ban was substituted by miss of the Olympics in South Korea for them. Russian Olympic Committee President Alexander Zhukov has called this verdict quite fair.

As the Russkiy Mir Foundation has reported earlier, in case of justification, the national sportsmen earlier banned by the International Olympic Committee, will be able to take part in the forthcoming Olympics.
