The Monument of the Liberation of Warmia and Mazury will not be destroyed, RIA Novosti reports. Originally it was called the Gratitude Monument to the Red Army.

According to city Deputy Mayor Yaroslav Sloma, the decommunization law adopted last year implies pulling down monuments allegedly praising totalitarian regime. At this point it is very arguable which of the monuments actually symbolize totalitarianism, Mr Sloma emphasized.
The monument is an architectural monument, and has to be protected by the current legislation, the official marked. Therefore, the monument will rest in place until the law changes.

Also the city Deputy Mayor has promised not to disturb burial sites. The city authorities have always taken care of graves of Russian soldiers who died in First and Second World Wars, and will take care of them in the future, he has underlined.

As the Russkiy Mir Foundation reported earlier, on 22nd of June 2017, the Polish Parliament approved amendments to the law on decommunization, which implies pulling down hundreds of monuments allegedly praising the Soviet regime. All monuments will be pulled down within a year. Overall, there are one and a half thousand memorials; about a half of them is dedicated to the Red Army.
