New York State Senate proclaimed April of 2019 the month of Russian-American history. The document, signed by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, will be read at Pushkin Hall in New York at the opening ceremony of the Month on April 2. On the same evening, viewers will see the premiere of The Seagull play staged by Russian director Alexei Burago with American actors, the Russian American Cultural Heritage Center’s Facebook page informs.

The Month of Russian-American history was established on the initiative of Russian American Cultural Heritage Center in 2012. Since then, it has been held annually and included historical, cultural and educational events, in which Russian and American actors, musicians, historians and public figures take part. Announcing the next Russian-American History Month, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo thanked members of Russian American Cultural Heritage Center for their contribution to the development of the United States.

In addition to the premiere of Chekhov's The Seagull, Pushkin Festival was included in the program of the Month. Russian-speaking theaters of the USA will take part in it. During the festival, viewers will be able to see a literary and musical composition about life and work of Alexander Pushkin and The Tale of Tsar Saltan play. They will also attend a lecture dedicated to Russian poet.

The Seagull play is not the first production of the works of Anton Chekhov, which was carried out by Russian director Alexey Burago. In his interview with RUNYweb.com, the director said that he decided to put Chekhov on stages of the United States and other countries after seeing American interpretations of Chekhov's work that had outraged him.
