Results of photo contest dedicated to pandemic summed up

The results of the international photo contest dedicated to the pandemic have been summed up. The News Photo Awards. Overcoming COVID contest was organized for professional photographers and held by TASS news agency, the official website of the project reports. 

The idea for an international photo contest dedicated to the pandemic was put forward by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. In total, the conest received 4,000 from professional press photographers in 84 countres. The grand prize amounted to $10,000. The contest also included two nominations - Single Photo and Photo Series. The winners received $3,000 each.

The grand prize went to Brais Lorenzo Couto from Spain. The photographer captured an elderly woman in a local nursing house. Due to the pandemic restrictions, she had to spend the 98th birthday without her relatives and was very surprised and pleased when the employees of the institution congratulated her. "It was a really happy moment after so many difficult months," the photographer explained.

Russian Ilya Pitalev won the Single Photo nomination. The shot made by him depicts an Orthodox priest in a protective suit during his visit to an elderly woman's flat. The Photo Series prize went to Adam Gray from US. He made photos of doctors and their patients in the midst of the pandemic. 

The jury consisted of photo editors and visual content professionals from leading Russian and foreign news outlets.
