Monument to Latvian Waffen SS Legions dismantled in Belgium

The monument to the Latvian legions of the Waffen SS has been demolished in Belgium, RIA Novosti reports. Scientists from Belgium and from other countries came to the conclusion that the monument insulted the victims of crimes committed by the SS from the Baltic Republic. The beehive-shaped monument with the inscription The Latvian Beehive was recognized as an object of admiration for the Nazis and justification of war crimes.

The monument was installed in Zedelgem four years ago on the site of a British legionnaire POW camp. The Latvian Ambassador to Belgium participated in the opening ceremony. Many residents of the city did not accept the monument, protests followed, which forced the local authorities to look into the issue.

The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, which promised to take action due to the dismantling of the monument. The museum even sent a protest to the mayor of Zedelgem. However, the message was not taken into account.

Processions of members of the Latvian Waffen SS Legion are held annually in Riga.
