In Jerusalem, flowers and wreaths were laid at the Memorial Candle monument, which immortalized the feat of the defenders and residents of besieged Leningrad. The ceremony was timed to coincide with Victory Day, which is celebrated in Israel at the official level, TASS reports.

The ceremony was attended by Russian diplomats, as well as Israeli social activists and veterans. Russian Ambassador Anatoly Viktorov noted that Victory Day in Israel is recognized at the state level, it is a sacred and national holiday, which residents celebrate "not only by law, but also by conscience, and by spiritual call."

The diplomat noted that in Israel they perfectly remember the genocide unleashed by the Nazis, the heroic resistance of the Soviet army, as well as its decisive role in the victory over the Nazis. Anatoly Viktorov emphasized that up to 500,000 Jews fought against the Nazis as part of the Soviet armed forces.

Events in honor of Victory Day started in Israel on May, 5. The program included a motor rally with the participation of 1,000 people, an event at the monument in memory of the participants in the Great Patriotic War, the procession of the Immortal Regiment and other events. More than 60 monuments in honor of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War have been opened on the territory of Israel.
