Slovakia celebrated the Victory Over Fascism Day

More than 200 people participated in an event dedicated to the 78th anniversary of the victory over fascism in Bratislava on May 8, 2023. Wreaths and flowers were laid at the monument to the Soviet soldier-liberator at the Slavin Memorial Complex in the city center.


The Slavin Memorial Complex is the resting place of about seven thousand Soviet soldiers who died during the liberation of Slovakia in 1945.

Ceremonies commemorating heroes were also held in other major cities of the republic. The president of Slovakia Zuzana Chaputova, members of the cabinet and parliament of Slovakia, representatives of diplomatic missions, public organizations, and local population took part in these events. The president of the country, noted the role of the Red Army in the liberation of Eastern Europe: "Our territory and the territory of Eastern Europe were liberated mainly by the Soviet Red Army with the help of local fighters of the anti-Hitler Resistance, the 1st Czechoslovak army corps and the Romanian army."


European Foundation for Slavic Literature and Culture representatives also paid tribute to the soldiers who died fighting on the territory of Slovakia during World War II.

On the eve of the Victory Day, the Slovak biker community Brother for Brother held a motor rally through towns in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, where large memorials to victims and heroes of World War II are located.
