The Russian Commissioner for Human Rights Tatyana Moskalkova received almost 1,500 appeals about violations of the rights of Russian citizens abroad last year. This figure is higher than in previous years. According to the report on the activities of the Ombudswoman, the complaints came from 57 countries, TASS reports.

Most of the appeals were sent by Russians living on Ukrainian territory. In 2021, there were three times fewer such complaints from Ukraine. Most often, they reported discrimination, asked for help in restoring property rights and resolving social issues. The appeals also concerned the protection of the rights of detainees and convicts, their extradition to Russia.

The number of requests from abroad has increased on most topics. There were four times more requests for assistance in resolving social issues, almost twice - for assistance in the framework of the administrative and civil process, more than 1,5 times - for the protection of family rights, motherhood, fatherhood and childhood. Requests for the return of women and children who found themselves in the zone of military conflict in Syria and Iraq increased by a quarter.
