The memory of Maxim Gorky was honored in Italy the day before, on June, 18, RIA Novosti reports. The traditional ceremony was held in Sorrento, which became the home of the famous Russian writer for several years.

The event was organized by the city Institute of Culture, which bears the name of Torquato Tasso. According to its leader Luciano Russo, the memorial event took place for the third time. Unfortunately, he added, representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora also gathered at the monument to the writer, waving flags and shouting slogans.

Luciano Russo stressed that not a word was said about politics during the event. ''We only talked about Gorky,'' he added. Luigi Marino, who heads the Gorky association, stressed that the writer strongly condemned manifestations of nationalism.

Earlier, a portrait sculpture to the Russian writer was solemnly opened in Sorrento, where he lived on short visits for about ten years, in 2018. The idea to install the monument came from the mayor's office of the Italian city and the organizing committee of the Gorky Prize, which is received every year by the best writers and translators of Italy.

Gorky wrote many of his works in Sorrento and on the island of Capri. Impressions of life in Italy and local folklore were reflected in his cycle Tales of Italy.
