A native of Russia became one of Nobel Prize winners in chemistry this year, TASS reports. Alexey Ekimov, Mungi J. Bavendi, Louis Brus were noted ''for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots.''

Quantum dots have found wide application in various industries, including the production of LED television screens and solar panels. Surgeons use them to remove tumors.

Alexey Ekimov was born in 1945. He graduated from the Faculty of Physics of Leningrad State University. In 1974, he became a candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, in 1989 a - Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. His thesis work was devoted to quantum dimensional phenomena in semiconductor microcrystals.

In the early 1980s, he succeeded in creating size-dependent quantum effects in colored glass. His developments were continued by Louis Bruce and Mungi Bawendi.

At the end of the 20th century, the scientist moved to US. Since 1999, he has been working in New York at Nanocrystals Technology. He taught extensively at the most famous universities in the West. Alexey Ekimov is a laureate of the USSR State Prize and the R.W. Wood Prize.

The last time a Russian scientist became a Nobel laureate in chemistry was in the middle of the 20th century. In 1956, Nikolai Semenov received the award for substantiating the general quantitative theory of chain reactions.
