Events dedicated to the feat of Russian sailors during the earthquake 115 years ago started in Reggio Calabria and Messina, the telegram channel of the Russian Consulate General in Palermo reports.

Participants in the events recall the feat of Russian sailors, who were among the first to come to the aid of the Italians after the earthquake. The program includes a flower-laying ceremony at memorials to Russian heroes.

Russian diplomatic missions in Italy and compatriots carefully preserve the memory of the Russian sailors who came to the aid of the Italian people in December, 1908, when the terrible disaster claimed the lives of more than half of the inhabitants of Messina.

Last year, vandals tore down a memorial plaque in honor of Russian heroes in Italy. The sign was promptly restored through the efforts of the Russian Consulate General in Palermo with the participation of Russian compatriots.
