Belgians collecting money for Peter I monument

Paul Delaroche, Portrait of Peter the Great The monument to the Russian Emperor Peter the Great is to be erected in the city of Liege, Belgium, as per TASS. Peter I paid a visit to this city in 1717.

Belgian Fund of Peter the Great has announced the finance raising process. It is necessary to collect five thousand euros more to complete the project. Overall sum needed for the monument installation is eighty thousand euros.

The emperor’s bust made of bronze is to be opened June 21st. The place for its installation is a square in the historical center of Liege. The opening ceremony should coincide with the international festival dedicated to 300th anniversary of Peter I’s visit to Belgium.

Window to Europe festival in commemoration of this event is to be held in the city of Spa.

The monument in Liege is not the first one in Belgium. At the end of XX century a monument to the Russian monarch was opened in Antwerp during the festival called Days of Peter the Great. The Russian Emperor will be eternalized in the French city of Reims this year.
