Russian Paralympians stay second in total medal standings

Russian Paralympians won 24 medals at 2018-Paralympic Games in PyeongChang, including 8 golden, 10 silver and 6 bronze awards, TASS informs. Thirty sportsmen and 6 attendants accompanying visually impaired athletes represented our country at the competitions.

The majority of awards in PyeongChang were taken by our female biathlon and ski teams. Para athletes competed for 38 medals in three categories, where Russians managed to get 7 golds.

Anna Milenina won the women’s biathlon standing 12.5km sprint race, despite Ekaterina Rumyansteva overtook Anna several times at the very beginning. Ekaterina herself got her gold in the women’s biathlon standing 10km and 6km races, as well as in the cross-country 15km event.

Mikhalina Lysova, who was much counted on in the group of visually impaired sportsmen, was admitted for the competitions at the last moment. It did not prevent her from winning the gold in biathlon race.

Marta Zainullina delivered the brightest performance in the sitting category. The athlete took 3 medals including silver in 10 km biathlon race. The bronze medal was taken by Irina Gulyaeva.

Aleksey Bugaev finished first in the men’s standing Super combined event bringing the golden medal to his country. Maria Papulova of 36 years old took the 4th place.
Despite the fact that the wheelchair curling group leader Alexey Ivanov was not declared eligible for the competitions, the team including Marat Romanov, Darya Schukina, Alexander Shevchenko and Andrei Mescheryakov took the 5th place.

The gala closing ceremony of the Winter Paralympics in PyeongChang was held the evening before. The following games will take place in 2020 in Beijing.
