Anna Shcherbakova and Alexander Bolshunov named Athletes of the Year

18-years old Russian figure skater Anna Shcherbakova won gold at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in China in women’s singles event, TASS reports. She was awarded on December, 14th.

18-year-old Anna Shcherbakova won the 2022 Olympics in women's singles. Last year she became the world champion.

Other contenders for the award were Vitalina Batsarashkina (she has won twice Olympic gold medals in shooting), and Olympic skiing champion Natalya Nepryaeva.

Cross-country skier  Alexander Bolshunov, who climbed to the highest step of the Olympics podium three times, was awarded the Sportsman of the Year title. The athlete is the first Russian skier to won the Olympic Games, the World Championship, the Tour de Ski race and the overall World Cup standings. In total, he has 9 Olympic medals.

Swimmer Kliment Kolesnikov and chess player Ian Nepomniachtchi were fighting for the award as well. 

The head coach of the Russian cross-country skiing team Elena Vyalbe has become the Coach of the Year. The team led by Elena has brought Russia 4 gold, four silver and three bronze medals at the last Olympics. 

The National Sports Award was launched more than ten years ago. The Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation with the participation of experts and fans is choosing the leaders in 11 nominations. The awards are handed by athletes, coaches, representatives of the media and the constituent entities of the federation, thanks to whom sports are becoming more popular in Russia.
