Russian Language Day celebrated for 1st time at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris

Russian Language Day was first celebrated at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, TASS reports. The Russian Permanent Representative to this organization, Rinat Alyautdinov, recalled that a year ago UNESCO made a decision on multilingualism. Language days are held within its framework. Besides the Day of the Russian Language, there are, in particular, the Day of the Francophonie, the Day of the Arabic Language.

According to the diplomat, the Russian language is one of the main languages used in the work of UNESCO. He hopes that the celebration of Russian Language Day will turn into an annual tradition. The idea of the holiday was put forward by the representatives of Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. 

Musicians from Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Japan, and France performed at a concert dedicated to the holiday.
