Riga continues to struggle with the legacy of the Soviet era, reports the BALTNEWS Telegram channel. Municipal services are currently removing elements of fences installed along Mukusalas Street's embankment. These fences, adorned with emblems of the USSR, are being taken down.

They promise to replace the images of the sickle and hammer with suns and put them back in place. Some will become exhibits of the Latvian Museum of Occupation.

As Russkiy Mir reported, the Constitutional Court of Latvia recognized the dismantling of Soviet monuments to the liberators as legal.

Advisor to the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN Headquarters in Geneva Yaroslav Yeremin, pointed out the inadmissibility of selectivity in the protection of monuments and shrines. He called the actions of the authorities of the Baltic States in demolishing monuments and destroying war graves barbaric.

The diplomat highlighted the crucial role of world heritage for humanity, stressing that it must not be dismantled based on specific political situations or the "incorrect" nationality or religion of the individuals it commemorates or represents in terms of culture.
