Deputy Mayor of Riga Edward Ratnieks called the performance of Russian folk songs on Christmas Eve unacceptable, journalist Alexey Stefanov said on his Telegram channel. The incident occurred on Dome Square in Riga.
Riga authorities found out about the performance of Russian songs at the Christmas market after complaints from nationalist residents. The vice mayor said that ''such things do us no honor.''
Alexey Stefanov noted that the Riga authorities had previously recognized the inadmissibility of using the Russian language in the capital, where many Russian speakers live. The journalist called the incident ''ordinary Nazism.''
Later, Edward Ratnieks stated that the organizers of the performance, before allowing the group to perform, checked the Russian songs being performed to see if they contained ''praise of Russia or Putin.''
