Orthodox Christians mark the Holy Week leading to Easter

10.04.2017

Flickr/Jevgenijs Slihto Orthodox believers celebrated Entry of Our Lord in Jesus Christ into Jerusalem Holiday this Sunday. This holiday is called Yew Sunday in Russia, TASS reports. At this day, as the name tells us, Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem and people hailed Him with Palm leaves as a King. The symbol of this holiday in Russia is a willow tree associated with wakening of spring and a new life.

Traditionally, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia conducted a Divine Liturgy at Yew Sunday and sanctified willow twigs.

On April 10, Orthodox Christians mark Holy Monday, the first day of the Holy Week and the last and the strictest week of the Fast culminating in Easter Sunday, the most important day in the Church year, during which Jesus rose from the dead. Orthodox and Catholic Easter Days coincide this year to be celebrated on April 16.
