Turkish photographer Burhan Ozbilici took the main prize at the contest World Press Photo for his picture taken during shooting at the Russian Ambassador to Ankara Andrey Karlov, TASS informs.

Winners of this high-profile photo contest were declared the day before in the Netherlands’ capital. Around 80 thousand pictures taken by 5 thousand people from 125 countries participated in the competition this year. Images of four Russian photographers were among winners.

The photo recognized as the best one was taken a few seconds after the shot killing the Russian Ambassador. The photo depicts the killer of the diplomat with a gun in his hand. The dying Karlov might be discerned lying at the background. Some people argue that the image of terror should not be photo of the year

The jury of World Press Photo contest acknowledged that it was a hard decision for them. Experts believe that this picture stands for the concentration of all the hatred in our world. After looking at it, you would want to put it away immediately. The killer reached the point of no return and decided to attack the country, he put the blame on for everything happening to his region. Experts consider this picture is a symbol of uneasy situation in today’s world.

Commemorative plate in honor of Andrey Karlov

Andrey Karlov was murdered in Ankara last December during opening ceremony of the photography exhibition. Commemorative plate on the first Soviet Foreign Service office in Ankara was installed in honor of the perished Russian Ambassador. Flowers for diplomats working here were laid to this plate to celebrate their professional holiday and to revere the tradition, started by Andrey Karlov. Russian diplomats, Moscow Countrymen Association officials and Russian expats living in Turkey took part in the ceremony.
