Due to the coronavirus pandemic, work on the construction of the monument to the legendary Russian traveler and discoverer Thaddeus Bellingshausen on the Saaremaa island has been suspended. Previously, it was planned that the monument would be opened this summer, at the beginning of which the world celebrated the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by Russian sailors under the leadership of Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev, ERR.ee reports.

Work on the creation of the monument is expected to continue next year. Saaremaa Island was chosen to erect a monument to Thaddeus Bellingshausen, since it was there that the Russian admiral was born in 1778. Russia is also taking part in the work.

Another monument to Bellingshausen was already unveiled this year; it appeared at the Russian station bearing his name in Antarctica in January.

The expedition, during which the sixth continent was discovered, lasted 751 days. During the voyage, participants mapped 29 islands. The Mirny and Vostok sloops returned to Kronstadt on August 5, 1821, they were personally met by Tsar Alexander I.
